Hi, I’m Richárd, and welcome to my blog!
If you’ve landed here, chances are you share my passion for the great outdoors, car camping, and the freedom of hitting the road. I am based in Vácszentlászló, Hungary, and whenever I have the chance, I pack up and set off to explore the hidden gems of the country.
My current setup is an Opel Grandland X equipped with a Berger CampLodge 120 roof tent and a CRUZ Airo Dark T roof rack. I am always on the lookout for the most breathtaking panoramic spots, whether it’s a quiet hilltop, a deep forest, or a secret island on the Danube.
What is this website about? Since my primary goal is to build a local community of wild camping enthusiasts, the articles on this blog are written in Hungarian. Here, I document my travel stories, share my drone photography, write practical reviews about my gear, and discuss the unwritten rules of wild camping.

However, knowing the local rules, understanding where you can legally park for the night, and finding those truly special spots (instead of just relying on apps like Park4Night) can sometimes be tricky for foreigners.

⛺ Is Wild Camping Legal in Hungary? (The Basic Rules)
One of the most common questions from travelers is whether wild camping is allowed in Hungary. The short answer is yes, but with certain rules.
Here is what you need to know before pitching your rooftop tent:

The 24-Hour Rule: According to the Hungarian Forestry Law, you are allowed to camp in state-owned forests for recreational purposes for up to 24 hours without any special permission.

National Parks & Protected Areas: Wild camping is strictly prohibited in highly protected nature reserves (marked with „Fokozottan védett természeti terület” signs). Always check the map before setting up camp.

Vehicles and Off-Roading: While you can sleep in your rooftop tent, driving deep into the forest is illegal. You must stay on open, unpaved public roads and pull over safely to the side. Do not cross barriers or drive off-road into the vegetation.

Campfires & Fire Bans: You can only build a fire in designated fire pits. However, during dry seasons, the government often issues a nationwide fire ban (Tűzgyújtási tilalom). During a ban, lighting a fire is strictly forbidden everywhere, even in designated spots. You can check the current fire ban status on the official website: erdotuz.hu (Look for the map: red counties mean fire ban).

Leave No Trace: It goes without saying, but please respect nature. Take all your trash with you, leave the campsite exactly as you found it, and enjoy the peace of the Hungarian landscape!
🚗 Toll Roads & E-Vignettes (Autópálya Matrica)
Driving around Hungary is easy, but if you plan to use the motorways (highways starting with an ‘M’, such as M1, M3, M5, M7), you are required to purchase an electronic toll ticket known as the e-vignette (e-matrica).

Digital System: There are no physical toll booths or stickers for your windshield. The system uses cameras to read your license plate.

Buy Before You Drive: You must purchase the vignette before entering a toll road (or within a maximum of 60 minutes after entering).

Vehicle Categories: A standard passenger car (up to 7 seats and under 3.5 tons, like a regular SUV or estate car) requires a D1 vignette. However, if you are arriving in a larger campervan, a commercial van, or a car with more than 7 seats, you will likely need a D2 vignette. Always double-check your vehicle category!

Where to Buy: The easiest way is to buy it online through the official National Toll Payment Service website: nemzetiutdij.hu/en. You can also purchase them in person at almost any gas station across the country and near the borders.
🛑 Important Hungarian Forest Signs You Must Know
When driving on unpaved roads and looking for a wild camping spot in Hungary, you will likely encounter some local signs. Since they are only in Hungarian, here is a quick visual guide to help you understand where you can and cannot go:
1. „Behajtani Tilos” (No Entry) & Forestry Roads

What it says: Usually a standard red-bordered circle, sometimes with text like „Erdészeti magánút” (Private forestry road) or „Kivétel az erdészet” (Except forestry vehicles).

What it means: Do not enter with a vehicle. Even if the barrier is open, driving past this sign is illegal and can result in a heavy fine.
2. „Fokozottan Védett Természeti Terület” (Strictly Protected Area)

What it says: Strictly Protected Nature Reserve.

What it means: Wild camping is strictly prohibited here. You are not even allowed to leave the marked hiking trails on foot. If you see this sign, you must find another place to sleep. (Note: A simple „Természetvédelmi terület” sign means it’s a regular nature reserve, where the 24-hour wild camping rule generally still applies, but always respect the environment!)
3. „Magánterület” (Private Property) (Ide illeszd be egy „Magánterület / Idegeneknek belépni tilos” tábla képét)

What it says: Private Property / No Trespassing.

What it means: You are entering privately owned land (a farm, private forest, or estate). You cannot camp here without the explicit permission of the owner.
4. „Fakitermelés” (Logging / Forestry Operations)

What it says: Danger! Logging in progress.

What it means: Active forestry work is happening ahead. It is highly dangerous due to falling trees and heavy machinery. The road might be temporarily closed or blocked. Do not park or camp anywhere near these areas!
